Byzantine Templar Crucifix

Measures: 3/4 inch or 19 mm

This antique Byzantine Templar cross model hails from France and measures 3/4 inch or 19mm. On the reverse side is a representation of Our Lady of Liesse, a Catholic title given to Mary, the mother of Jesus. The Templar cross is adorned with several fleurs de lis and is granulated, adding to its unique character and charm.

Templar Crucifix Meaning

The sun and moon represent the victory of light over darkness: In Christian art, the sun and moon are sometimes depicted as symbols of Christ's victory over death and darkness. In a Templar context, this may represent the order's mission to defend the faith and uphold the light of God in the face of darkness and evil.

The letters on the cross hold significant meaning in the Christian faith. The letters L I E and S S E are an abbreviation of the Greek phrase "Ιησούς Χριστός νικά" (Iesous Christos Nikas), which translates to "Jesus Christ conquers." The cross also bears the letters C L R, which stands for "ΣΤΑΥΡΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΚΥΡΙΟΥ" (Stavros Tou Kyriou) in Greek, meaning "The Cross of the Lord" in English. These letters serve as reminders of the central role of the cross in the Christian faith and Christ's sacrifice for the salvation of humanity.

Byzantine style crucifixes traditionally feature the crucified Jesus on one side and the Virgin Mary and the Christ child on the other. The sun and moon depicted on the cross symbolize the victory of light over darkness, representing Christ's victory over death and darkness.

The hammer and sword on the right represent two of the instruments used in the Crucifixion of Jesus. According to the Gospel accounts, the soldiers who crucified Jesus used a hammer and nails to affix him to the cross, and a spear or sword to pierce his side.

The whip: The soldiers who beat Jesus before his Crucifixion used a whip, often called a "scourge," which had multiple lashes or thongs with sharp pieces of metal or bone embedded in them. The whip is often depicted in Christian art as a long, multi-stranded whip with pointed tips or barbs.
The spear: According to the Gospel of John, after Jesus died on the cross, a soldier pierced his side with a spear to confirm that he was dead. This spear is often depicted in Christian art as a long, pointed weapon, sometimes with drops of blood or other details.

This antique Byzantine Templar cross replica holds a rich history and deep meaning in the Christian faith, making it a significant and valuable addition to any collection or a cherished gift for someone special.
