Miraculous Medal Meaning
On November 27, 1830, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré, a humble Vincentian religious, and she appeared to her in this way:
The Virgin came dressed in white. Next to Her was a lucid globe on which stood the cross. Our Lady opened her hands and from her glowing fingers came luminous rays that descended towards the earth. Mary Most Holy said then to Sister Catherine:
"This globe that you have seen is the whole world where my children live, these luminous rays are the graces and blessings that I expand on all those who invoke me as a Mother." I feel so happy to be able to help the children who implore me for protection. But there are so many who never invoke me! And many of these precious rays are lost, because they seldom pray to me. "
Then around the head of the Virgin a circle or an aureole was formed with these words: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us that we turn to You". And a voice said to Catalina: "You have to make a medal, similar to what you are seeing. All the people who carry it will feel the protection of the Virgin". And an M appeared, on the M a cross, and under the hearts of Jesus and Mary. It is what is today in the Miraculous Medal.
The Meaning and Symbolism of St Catherine Miraculous Medal
The Virgin of the Miraculous Medal, whose feast is on November 27, asked Saint Catherine Labouré to make a medal representing what she witnessed during the apparition and, therefore, this sacred object has several details that help to understand its real meaning.
This is what the symbols that appear in the Miraculous Medal indicate.
1. Triumph over Satan
On the obverse of the Miraculous Medal, the Virgin appears on the world and crushes the head of the serpent with her feet. This indicates that the Immaculate has power, by virtue of her grace, to triumph over Satan.
2. Evocation of the Apocalypse
The twelve stars on Mary's head and the color of her wardrobe show the woman dressed in the sun from the Book of Revelation.
3. Rays of grace
The outstretched hands emanating rays are a sign and symbol of the mission that the Virgin Mary has as mother and mediator of the graces she pours out on the world and to those who ask for them.
4. A sign of the Immaculate
The famous inscription "Oh Mary" affirms the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin. This detail was manifested to Saint Catherine on November 27, 1830, long before the dogma was proclaimed in 1854. It also indicates the mission of intercession of the Mother of God.
5. The royalty of Mary
The globe, which represents the earth, is under the feet of the Virgin because she is Queen of Heaven and Earth.
6. Reference to the Mother of the Crucified
On the back of the Medal is the "M", symbol of Mary and her spiritual motherhood. The cross is the mystery of redemption and the bar that holds it is the letter of the Greek alphabet "Yota" or "I", which is a monogram of the name "Jesus". All this symbolizes the Mother of Christ Crucified.
7. The Church with the Sacred Hearts
The twelve stars are a symbol of the Church that Christ founded on the apostles. While the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary refer to the devotion that Christians should have to both hearts.
